Ravan Dahan or burning of the effigy of Ravan, marks the symbolic victory of Lord Ram over the King of Lanka Ravana. According to Hindu mythology, Ravan was defeated after a fierce battle with Lord Ram, marking the conclusive victory of good over evil.

It is celebrated with great fervour and excitement in cities like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, Madhubani, Almora and parts of Uttarakhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in North India. People come out in large number to witness the customary annual burning of the effigies of Ravan and his brothers Meghnad and Kumbhakaran, following which they celebrate and wish each other prosperity.

The day also signifies the victory of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The goddess fought with him for 10 days and nine nights. This year, it falls on October 8, Tuesday.

According to the Drik Panchang, the Vijay Muhurat is between 02.04 pm and 02.50 pm. The total duration is of 46 minutes.

Bengalis celebrate Vijayadashami, which also falls on the same day. Shami Puja, Aparajita Puja and Seema Avalanghan are some of the rituals which are performed on the day. These rituals are supposed to be done during the Aparahna time.

The Drik Panchang says the Aparahna Puja time falls between 01.17 pm and 03.36 pm on October 8, 2019. The total duration is of 2 hours 15 minutes. The Dashami tithi begins at 12.30 pm on Oct 07, 2019 and ends 02.50 pm on October 08, 2019.
