Listen heartbeat of common man, Doctors

Doctors agitation on NMC Bill Acute shortage of Doctors in India Rural areas are worst sufferers

Doctors are continuing agitation on NMC Bill which is already passed by Parliament and awaiting President's asset. But they must listen the heartbeat of India. A report published in Times of India reveals pathetic situation. India is having 9.27 lakhs Doctors on rolls and ratio of one Doctor to 1000 people is 0.69%. WHO benchmark of 1 Doctor to 1000 people if to realise, India requires 4.26 lakh Doctors additionally. At present rate, it will take another 5.4 years to reach this goal. But it is only partial picture. Real picture is different. If you take region wise and State Wise position, the position is alarming. Except South and West, the remaining parts of the country lacks doctors in alarming positions. Look at States, UP , the largest State is having 62k Doctors and requires 1.71lakh more Doctors but its availability of medical seats per year is 7.5k. With this strength, it takes 23 years to reach WHO goal. Jharkhand position is more horrible. Jharkhand requires nearly 88 years to fill the gap, Bihar requires 52 years.  so, the picture at all India level is totally different from State level.

Only few States like Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Goa are over 1:1000 ratio. Telangana is far behind national average. As on now, only 4000 Doctors are available and requires 35000 Doctors to reach the goal. As on now, medical seats available are only around 5000 and it takes another 7 years to reach the goal. It is having one more fascinating story. Even in surplus States, many Districts are suffering from shortage of Doctors. Tamil Nadu which reached the ratio comfortably long back is suffering shortage of Doctors in half of the Districts. So is the case with other States also.

The Doctors who are on agitation should go through these statistics. One, eastern and northern parts of the country is having acute shortage of Doctors and shortage in rural areas is pan India. What is the solution offered by these agitating Doctors? As far as rural areas are concerned, CHPs( Community Health Practitioners) is the only solution. Otherwise even after a decade, people will suffer in these areas. In the larger interest of Country and people , Doctors should support NMC Act and help in nation building Universal Health Care. Pl listen to the heartbeat of Common people, Doctors.
